From Publishers Weekly
Woodrell flirts with—but doesn't succumb to—clich in his eighth novel, a luminescent portrait of the poor and desperate South that drafts 16-year-old Ree Dolly, blessed with "abrupt green eyes," as its unlikely heroine. Ree, too young to escape the Ozarks by joining the army, cares for her two younger brothers and mentally ill mother after her methamphetamine-cooking father, Jessup, disappears. Recently arrested on drug charges, Jessup bonded out of jail by using the family home as collateral, but with a court date set in one week's time and Jessup nowhere to be found, Ree has to find him—dead or alive—or the house will be repossessed. At its best, the novel captures the near-religious criminal mania pervasive in rural communities steeped in drug culture. Woodrell's prose, lyrical as often as dialogic, creates an unwieldy but alluring narrative that allows him to draw moments of unexpected tenderness from predictable scripts: from Ree's fearsome, criminal uncle Teardrop, Ree discovers the unshakable strength of family loyalty; from her friend Gail and her woefully dependant siblings, Ree learns that a faith in kinship can blossom in the face of a bleak and flawed existence. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–In the poverty-stricken hills of the Ozarks, Rees Dolly, 17, struggles daily to care for her two brothers and an ill mother. When she learns that her absent father, a meth addict, has put up the family home as bond, she embarks on a dangerous search to find him and bring him home for an upcoming court date. Her relatives, many of whom are in the business of cooking crank, thwart her at every turn, but her fight to save the family finally succeeds. Rees is by turns tough and tender. She teaches her brothers how to shoot a shotgun, and even box, the way her father had taught her. Her hope is that these boys would not be dead to wonder by age twelve, dulled to life, empty of kindness, boiling with mean. A male friend feeds her hallucinogenic mushrooms and then assaults her. But, like Mattie Ross in Charles Portis's True Grit (Penguin, 1995), Rees beats the odds with spunk and courage. In spare but evocative prose, Woodrell depicts a harsh world in which the responsibilities for survival ultimately give Rees meaning and direction. He depicts the landscape, people, and dialects with stunning realism. A compelling testament to how people survive in the worst of circumstances.–Pat Bangs, Fairfax County Public Library, Va

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In Give Us a Kiss (1996), Woodrell introduced the Redmonds, marijuana farmers from the Ozarks ("It's a strange, powerful bloodline poetry, I guess, but there's something so potent to us Redmonds about bustin' laws together, as a family"). Now he turns his attention to the Redmonds' archenemies, the Dollys, another family of dirt farmers who thrive on bustin' laws together (crank cocaine being their crop of choice). But this time the Dollys aren't feuding with the Redmonds as much as battling each other. Sixteen-year-old Ree Dolly, who dreams of escaping her family by joining the army ("where you got to travel with a gun and they make everybody help keep things clean") is caught in the crossfire when her daddy jumps bail, leaving her stuck with two younger brothers and the prospect of forfeiting their house if the old man doesn't show up for his court date. To find Daddy, dead or alive, and save the house, Ree must ask questions of her notoriously tight-lipped relatives ("talkin' causes witnesses"). When she keeps pushing for answers, the relatives push back. Like his characters, and especially his teen characters, Woodrell's prose mixes tough and tender so thoroughly yet so delicately that we never taste even a hint of false bravado, on the one hand, or sentimentality, on the other. And Ree is one of those heroines whose courage and vulnerability are both irresistible and completely believable--think of not just Mattie Ross in True Grit but also Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird or even Eliza Naumann in Bee Season. One runs out of superlatives to describe Woodrell's fiction. We called his last novel, The Death of Sweet Mister (2001), "word perfect." If that's true--and it is--this one is word perfecter. Great writing; depressing subject
By Mary Reinert
Woodrell has definitely captured what it is like to live in a subculture that is so isolated from the bigger world around it. The Ozark area is such a paradox of beautiful lodges and resorts and, on the other hand, pockets of isolated, poverty-stricken rural poor. Woodrell's portrayal of the Dolly clan is, unfortunately, not unbelievable.

Ree's search for her father who has skipped his bail reflects a parallel search for a better life; she doesn't know where to look for him and her only idea of a better life for herself is to join the Army. The effects that meth have had on the rural poor is devastating. That together with generations of family hardships, feuds, intermarriage, and poverty paints a pretty depressing picture.

I live in Missouri and have just now discovered Woodrell. He calls his writing "Country Noir" which is truly an apt description. This isn't a pretty book, but it is an honest one and one that I would highly recommend for those looking to meet characters not found in most other writing.

a winner, but still champion
By Starved for It
Twenty years ago Jewel Cobb dragged a comb through his greasy, antique pompadour and in that brilliant moment Daniel Woodrell announced his intention to entertain a readership. Predictably Mr. Cobb did not survive that novel, Mr. Woodrell has gone on to publish eight of them and become a leading contender for the title of Most Underappreciated Writer in America (campaigning in the heavyweight division).

It may be that the very voices decrying Woodrell's lack of popular acceptance are at least partly responsible for it. The laudatory reviews, and they are finally numerous, tend toward the use of adjectives like 'dark,' and 'bleak,' and, 'lyrical,' and these suggest literary heavy sledding, reading reminiscent of a high school English assignment. It must be conceded that Woodrell is a serious writer, a purveyor of social outrage and dismay at the human condition, but not a page of his work passes without something to laugh at, cringe from, fret over--in other words the vicarious experience that is the stuff of ENTERTAINMENT.

In 'Winter's Bone' Woodrell continues to make good on his old promise. Though 'Bone' is not as consistently funny as some of his previous books it is a glistening showcase of an ever maturing and deepening compassion. America has no patience for her poor and feels it is in the poorest taste when the underclass is anything but invisible. Classism remains our most pervasive and acceptable prejudice. It is into the teeth of this nasty attitude that Woodrell flings the wonderful, large humanity of his people. Ree Dolly is the latest and most finely drawn of these Woodrellian characters. To read 'Winter's Bone' is to be instructed and ennobled, but really Woodrell means no harm by it. His trick, his art, is to make the hard lesson savory.

The best unknown writer
By David Beck
Why Daniel Woodrell is not a household name says much about literacy in America. Having read most of his books, I can't help thinking, Why don't more people know him? Why don't bookstores carry his novels? Why doesn't someone turn this book into a movie?

Anyway, Winter Bones is one of his best. It is a novel about a young girl who is on a journey of discovery, a discovery not just about her meth lab cooker dad but about herself. It is a picaresque novel, much like Portis's True Grit. She finds "justice" at a cost, but her determination and heart, to keep her family from homelessness, makes her one of America's most down-on-her-luck, inspirational characters in contemporary lit.

Woodrell fills his novels with great descriptions and dialogue. He creates characters whom you wouldn't want necessarily to meet, but are still intriguing, sympathetic and compelling.

Great book! Great author! Read Winter Bones and all of Woodrell's books. Maybe the word will get out, so that authors like Woodrell will be more well-known and praised like a lot of less-worthy authors.

In 1929, in the blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, a company built a swimming pool the size of a football field; named Dreamland, it became the vital center of the community. Now, addiction has devastated Portsmouth, as it has hundreds of small rural towns and suburbs across America--addiction like no other the country has ever faced. How that happened is the riveting story of Dreamland.

With a great reporter's narrative skill and the storytelling ability of a novelist, acclaimed journalist Sam Quinones weaves together two classic tales of capitalism run amok whose unintentional collision has been catastrophic. The unfettered prescribing of pain medications during the 1990s reached its peak in Purdue Pharma's campaign to market OxyContin, its new, expensive--extremely addictive--miracle painkiller. Meanwhile, a massive influx of black tar heroin--cheap, potent, and originating from one small county on Mexico's west coast, independent of any drug cartel--assaulted small town and mid-sized cities across the country, driven by a brilliant, almost unbeatable marketing and distribution system. Together these phenomena continue to lay waste to communities from Tennessee to Oregon, Indiana to New Mexico.

Introducing a memorable cast of characters--pharma pioneers, young Mexican entrepreneurs, narcotics investigators, survivors, and parents--Quinones shows how these tales fit together. Dreamland is a revelatory account of the corrosive threat facing America and its heartland.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2015: The rise of OxyContin addiction and subsequent heroin use has been much in the news lately as we try to make sense of what is happening in suburban and small town America. Sam Quinones’ Dreamland takes a multifaceted approach to the subject, profiling people from all walks of life, ranging from citizens of impoverished Mexican ranchos to young affluent white athletes, all cogs in the wheel of the latest drug epidemic. Unlike the crack cocaine phenomenon of the 1980s, today’s widespread opiate addiction has roots in the prescription pads of certified physicians and the marketing machine of Big Pharma. When the addict, forced by availability and economics, transitions to heroin he is met by a new breed of entrepreneurial drug dealers who are only too happy to take calls and make deliveries. The changing landscape of small town America, along with science, opportunity, shame, and of course greed, all play a role here and to see the puzzle come together, one comprehensible piece at a time, is as fascinating as it is unsettling.-- Seira Wilson

Review

"Does what ‘Fast Food Nation’ did for fast food to Black Tar Heroin and oxycodone . . . A stunning journalistic journey that follows the history and narrative trajectories that lead to this entirely new style of cultivating drug addiction . . . I just love this book." - Marc Maron

“The most original writer on Mexico and the border out there.” ―San Francisco Chronicle Book Review

“Over the last 15 years, he has filed the best dispatches about Mexican migration and its effects on the United States and Mexico, bar none.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Journalist Quinones weaves an extraordinary story, including the personal journeys of the addicted, the drug traffickers, law enforcement, and scores of families affected by the scourge, as he details the social, economic, and political forces that eventually destroyed communities in the American heartland and continues to have a resounding impact.” ―starred review, Booklist

“Quinones' research ensures that there is something legitimately interesting (and frequently horrifying) on every page. A-.” ―Entertainment Weekly

“[A] compelling examination . . . a driven and important narrative.” ―Wall Street Journal

“In Dreamland, former Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Quinones deftly recounts how a flood of prescription pain meds, along with black tar heroin from Nayarit, Mexico, transformed the once-vital blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, and other American communities into heartlands of addiction. With prose direct yet empathic, he interweaves the stories of Mexican entrepreneurs, narcotics agents, and small-town folks whose lives were upended by the deluge of drugs, leaving them shaking their heads, wondering how they could possibly have resisted.” ―Mother Jones

“Smack is back in the news as heroin use spikes and busts pile up at the border, making Dreamland a timely book. Veteran journalist and storyteller Sam Quinones provides investigative reporting to explain the latest surge. But he also goes way deeper; he tells the social and human stories at the heart of the opiate trade and how it tortures the souls of America and Mexico.” ―Ioan Grillo, author of EL NARCO

“Dreamland spreads out like a transnational episode of The Wire, alternately maddening, thrilling, depressing, and with writing as sharp and insightful as a razor blade. You cannot understand our drug war and Mexican immigration to the United States without reading this book.” ―Gustavo Arellano, syndicated columnist Ask a Mexican!

“Quinones is a veteran journalist and expert storyteller long steeped in the demi-monde of Mexican-American bordercrossings. Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic is an intricate jigsaw puzzle piecing together his findings from intensive investigation of the unprecedented spread of heroin addiction throughout the United States over the past two decades . . . Dreamland offers an eye-opening, enlightening and mesmerizing account of one of the most important stories of the last few decades . . . Quinones is a master storyteller, with a knack of bringing hundreds of characters to life . . . Dreamland stands as a model of meticulous investigative reporting providing important insights not only the current opiate epidemic but also into the sometimes negative symbiosis between our country and our neighbors to the south.” ―New York Journal of Books

"Quinones recounts individual tales--from junkies in Portland, Ore., to pill mills in Appalachia to entrepreneurial heroin traffickers from small-town Mexico--to describe a “catastrophic synergy” in which over-prescription of opioid painkillers begets addicts, many of whom then turn to heroin, which is cheaper and just as ubiquitous." ―Best Books of 2015, Boston Globe

“Unflinching . . . compellingly investigated.” ―Kirkus

"The path of heroin from America’s urban slums to its trim suburban subdivisions is traced by a Los Angeles Times reporter. Quinones’ deeply researched and readable book says well-heeled addicts got hooked first on pain-killing medications like OxyContin--but then switched to much cheaper Mexican heroin, feeding a problem across the nation." ―Best Books of 2015, St. Louis Dispatch

“Fascinating . . . a harrowing, eye-opening look at two sides of the same coin, the legal and illegal faces of addictive painkillers and their insidious power.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A haunting tale of opiate abuse in the heartland . . . Using expert storytelling and exhaustive detail, Quinones chronicles the perfect storm of circumstances that cleared the way for the Mexican narcotic to infiltrate our small and midsize communities over the last two decades.” ―Kansas City Star

“Fascinating.” ―Salon

"You won’t find this story told better anywhere else, from the economic hollowing-out of the middle class to the greedy and reckless marketing of pharmaceutical opiates to the remarkable entrepreneurial industry of the residents of the obscure Mexican state of Nayarit . . . Dreamland--true crime, sociology, and expos--illuminates a catastrophe unfolding all around us, right now." ―Laura Miller’s 10 Favorite Books of 2015, Slate

“The must-read book about America's heroin crisis . . . Quinones combines thorough research with superlative narrative skills to produce a horrifying but compulsively readable book about opiate addiction . . . a book that every American should read. And I state that without reservation . . . This book is as much of a page-turner as a good mystery, as well as being thoroughly and disturbingly illuminating about a national crisis.” ―Christian Science Monitor

“A gripping read and hard-hitting account of a ubiquitous plague that has flown under the radar.” ―Portland Business Journal

“Quinones's absorbing narrative is deep in research, on-site reporting, personal interviews and insight. Spanning the central U.S. and crossing the Mexican border, Dreamland adroitly unsnarls the tangled business that feeds a growing lust for chemical euphoria and relief.” ―Shelf Awareness

"Every so often I read a work of narrative nonfiction that makes me want to get up and preach: Read this true story! Such is Sam Quinones’ astonishing work of reporting and writing, Dreamland: the True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic." ―Seattle Times

“Everybody should read this book. Everybody.” ―Rod Dreher, The American Conservative

“An important frame of reference for understanding America’s opiate epidemic.” ―Portland Press Herald

"[A] powerful investigation into the explosion of heroin abuse in suburban America that combines skillful reporting and strong research with a superb narrative." ―The Spectator

Nicely researched, enjoyable read...but chronic pain sufferers get short shift
By JKReads
This was a thoroughly researched book and I enjoyed Mr. Quinones's writing style. I was able to get clear mental pictures of the places and people he describes. I had no idea of the heroin trade and while I was aware that heroin addiction had spread to the heartland alarmingly, the complex system of the cartels was certainly eye opening. I also was vaguely aware of the 'pill mills' going on in Florida and other states primarily in the eastern part of the US, after reading this book I can say I not only know but am alarmed at how easy it was to get a Medicaid card and rake in big bucks selling Oxycontin on taxpayer money. I also agree that Big Pharma hid the dangers of Oxycontin and went ahead with a big push to doctors to prescribe it.
On the other side of the coin, I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for sixteen years and the premise that pain can be controlled solely by physical therapy, nutrition, counseling, acupuncture without medication is bunk. It might help in the short run, but at the end of the day you are still in pain. Only those who have chronic pain can fully understand what others in chronic pain are going through. I do not take Oxycontin because when it was given to me as a trial I recognized its potential to be a problem, I had the unwanted and unneeded euphoria and after it wears off the pain is +1000 than what it was before. I chose to stick with my regular medication, tramadol. As much as I definitely agree that the wild and irresponsible prescribing of opioids needed some strong checking, unless you have lived a day in the life of someone who is in terrible pain, denying pain control is a cruelty in my humble opinion. Not everyone who needs pain medications is taking them for recreational fun. If Big Pharma or pain doctors came out with something that could ease pain that has no interest to those merely looking for a buzz, believe me a lot of us would gladly use it.

Extraordinary Investigative Journalism
By Drake
I have been immersed in American cardiology for many years with little awareness that many thousands-- often young and privileged-- have been dying of the narcotic epidemic described so well in this book. The strangling web of causes, you will learn, includes misinterpreted medical research leading to deadly malpractice, shady doctors, the rusty economic meltdown, criminal behavior by Big Pharma, the easy penetration of Mexican heroin into the U.S., the economic desperation of Mexican small town culture, highly effective just-in -time heroin marketing techniques and even low pay at Walmart. This is insightful sociology told in the form of brief biographies. While sometimes repetitive, the overall effect of the book is devastating. This should be required reading for health professionals, educators, the parents of teenagers, law enforcement officials and legislators. The problem is far from over. This book will shock many awake.
The author has done brave work -- the Waltons, Pharmacy execs, and the cartels will not be happy readers.

Overly lyrical and rambling
By Amazon Customer
The prescription epidemic and its ties to the rise in heroin addiction is a fascinating subject and I was looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, what I found was a disjointed collection of anecdotes and an exhaustive look at the same issue from thirty different perspectives. This book could have easily been 100 pages shorter and lost none of its power.

Additionally, the author's efforts to add color to the narrative don't always land, or are used so often that they lose all meaning. For instance, he refers to one trafficker as "The Man" throughout the story, which starts out clunky and becomes annoying as he revisits it. Also, the phrase "heroin delivered like pizza" pops up in almost verbatim form about 50 times in the book. There are other places where the tonal shifts- in descriptions, sidebars on people's lives, etc. - are jarring and detract from the narrative.

The nexus between prescription pill abuse and black tar heroin is an important and tragic subject and I was impressed by the amount of research in the book and the author's commitment to the issue. However, in the end I found myself scanning/skipping pages because of the repetition and lack of clear structure in the book. With better editing and a more refined focus, this would have been a much more enjoyable read.

In wartime Germany, Rose Blanche witnesses the mistreatment of a little boy, and follows the truck that takes him to a camp. Secretly, Rose Blanche brings him and other children food. An excellent book to use not only to teach about the Holocaust, but also about living a life of ethics, compassion, and honesty.--School Library Journal. Full color.

From Publishers Weekly
Singling out the "astounding" paintings, PW called this WWII tale of a German girl who discovers the horrors of a concentration camp "a stunning book and a forceful argument for peace." All ages.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up During World War II, a young German schoolgirl, Rose Blanche, follows the soldiers when they arrest a boy and discovers a concentration camp in the woods. Thereafter , she takes food to the prisoners until the town is liberated. Ironically, when she travels to the camp on that day she is shot by the soldiers. The oppression of Fascism is shown through the powerful and realistic paintings. In Innocenti's large, meticulously detailed paintings, Rose Blanche is the only brightly colored individual, and her small figure is set against the drab colors of overwhelming buildings and masses of soldiers and townspeople. No skyline is shown until a radiant spring bursts forth at the site of her death after the liberation. Although the story is simply told, it will require interpretation as details such as the concentration camp are not named nor explained, and the death of Rose Blanche is implied but not stated. This is a difficult book to classify, as the text is easy enough for a young child to read alone, and it has the appearance of a picture bookbut the content of the text and illustrations is full of emotional impact and subtlety. Takashima's A Child in Prison Camp (Tundra, 1971) and Maruki's Hiroshima No Pika (Lothrop, 1982) present the horrors of war, but from the perspective of a child who survives, whereas in Gallaz' book, the child does not survive and is not the recounter of the events. The Children We Remember (Kar-Ben Copies, 1983) by Abells is an easier book for children to understand. Rose Blanche tells of an individual's courage in the face of injustice, but this theme is more fully developed in Orlev's novel The Island on Bird Street (Houghton, 1984). Rose Blanche, you are not alone
By E. R. Bird
Congratulations! You have successfully located the best translation of the book "Rose Blanche" available on the market today. While the British and German translations may change significant portions of this tale around and about, the American version (all thanks to hard work of excellent translators Martha Coventry and Richard Graglia) is true to authors Gallaz and Innocenti's original plot and vision. So well done you! Give yourself a pat on the back and a hanky. You'll need it after you finish reading the book.

It's Germany during World War II. As we watch, our little heroine, Rose Blanche, describes the early days of the war. The soldiers are being packed up and shipped away and everyone is cheering them on. Swastikas are plentiful. One day, Rose sees a small boy escape from a van in the middle of the street. The boy is quickly caught and placed within the cramped van once again. Curious, Rose Blanche follows the van to the edge of town and into the forest. There she comes face to face with the children of a concentration camp. After offering them some of her food, the first person narrative abruptly begins to be told in the third person instead. We are told that Rose Blanche continued to bring food to the hungry children. Finally, the citizens of the town flee, wounded soldiers amongst them. Rather than escaping, Rose Blanche makes one last trip to the camp, only to find it empty. A single shot rings out and we see the Communist soldiers filling the now abandoned town. The book ends with, "Rose Blanche's mother waited a long time for her little girl". Flowers bloom, but the single purple bloom the girl placed on the barbed wire has wilted.

Tragedy in the key of E. The text is rather well written, giving no specific person or persons blame, but rather suggesting a collective guilt. Admittedly, I was a little taken aback by the sudden switch in narrative. One minute you know exactly what Rose Blanche is thinking and the next you can only interpret her emotions through descriptions and visual images. A review of this book in the March 2004 issue of "Children's Literature in Education" suggested that this is done so that the reader is given a bit of distance when the girl is shot. Admittedly, I don't expect my heroines to die in the picture books I read but I think we can chalk that up to naivete on my part more than anything else. This is, after all, an incredibly realistic work of fiction. The character of Rose Blanche even attains a kind of religious piousness at the end of the tale. In her final picture, she stands in the position of a saint. Her eyes are downcast, one hand lightly touching her heart, and the other placing a small purple flower on the broken fence.

Which brings us to the illustrations. Innocenti's pictures deftly tell a story within the actual text. In the first few pictures, Rose appears in happy crowd scenes. Then, as she discovers more about the world in which she lives, she is placed farther and farther away from other people. Rose is continually set apart from the others by her clothing as well. Where everyone else is resigned to grays and browns, Rose sports a pink dress with a bright red bow on her head. The illustrations are strikingly realistic, never becoming cartoony or visually inconsistent. Innocenti is deft at the millions of different ways in which light changes a scene. And to top it all off, he's done some of the most brilliant fog I've ever seen put down on paper.

This is a book about seeing what other people won't. The name "Rose Blanche" is explained by the author on the book flap. The Rose Blanche was a group of young Germans that protested the war. Like the heroine of this tale, they were unduly executed for the crime of thinking differently. The best use of this book is to utilize it in such a way that we can never forget how important it is to question authority at all times and to always fight for the truth. It seems that message is more important today than ever. A tip of the hat to the Rose Blanches of the world.

Virginia SOL on the Holocaust - Moving and sensitive
By Lynda R. Neal
I was introduced to the holocaust in the 1960s as a military brat on a field trip to Dachau, Germany. I was 12. It gave me nightmares for months. It still affects me at 45. The original site has been cleaned up for tourists now (thank goodness). This book was given to me by a professor in my Reading Class at JMU. It is a very delicate response to a very intensely controvertial issue in world history. It can be treated lightly or on a deeper level for Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. No matter what the emphasis, treat it with great respect..... it has a deep impact on some children. It is a beautifully illustrated version of a very ugly issue of this world's humanity. Read it, but use with great care in a classroom. It's very potent.

an important book for all ages
By E. Hart
I was first introduced to this book in 6th grade, by my teacher. I am now a freshman in college, and i'm using it in a presentation about the Holocaust. The fact that this book has stayed in my memory for such a long time should give you an idea about the impact it has on readers. From the perspective of a student, I highly recommend this book to teachers everywhere. Its a book you'll never forget.
