Gr 7 Up—When slacker and sci-fi enthusiast Zak Duquette meets type-A scholar Ana Watson, he is strangely attracted; unfortunately, Ana has no time for anything but academics, as her parents' demands for perfection will ensure. But the two are forced to work together when Zak is coerced by a teacher to join the quiz bowl team with Ana and her whiz-kid younger brother, Clayton. Unfortunately for Zak, the quiz bowl takes place on the same weekend as WashingCon—the sci-fi convention where Zak has had many amazing adventures every year. After Zak extols the glories of the fest, Clayton sneaks away to experience it for himself. In order to keep Clayton's disappearance from her overly controlling parents, Ana must team up with Zak and brave the gathering of geeks, zombies, Vikings, and aliens to find her brother before curfew. In alternating chapters, as they meet one obstacle after another, this seemingly incongruous couple slowly begins to open up and to appreciate each other's talents. While Zak's devil-may-care attitude may be a response to his father's death and his mother's rather hasty marriage to a man with whom he is still not comfortable, Ana feels pressured by her parents to make up for her sister's transgressions that caused her to be banished from their home years ago. Strong personalities, a cast of out-of-this-world characters, and a fast-paced manhunt in an imaginative setting make this an appealing title for tweens and teens. VERDICT A zany romantic comedy for pop culture geeks and "Con" enthusiasts.—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

Review
“With perfect comic timing and outrageous twists, The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak will have you cheering for the underdog.” (Robin Constantine, author of The Promise of Amazing)

“A love letter to fanboys and fangirls everywhere. On the surface, the story is a lighthearted and entertaining romance, but serious undertones explore the fractured side of parent-child relationships and misfit characters desperate to find a tribe. A delightful romp for anyone still figuring out where they belong.” (Publishers Weekly)

“This well-paced novel is an excellent combination of self-discovery and adventure. Give this to fans of Eleanor and Park or Nick and Norah.” (Booklist)

“There is something very sweet and nerdy about the entire premise of the story, where the upside-down rules of cosplay and gaming conventions like Washingcon allow the outsiders to be heroes.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

“Fans of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist will find con-tentment here.” (Kirkus)

“A zany romantic comedy for pop culture geeks and ‘Con’ enthusiasts.” (School Library Journal)

“A nerd-friendly adventure story with a gooey, sweet romance center.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

From the Back Cover

The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak is Stonewall Book Award-winning author Brian Katcher's hilarious he said/she said romance about two teens discovering themselves on an out-of-this-world accidental first date.

It all begins when Ana Watson's brother, Clayton, ditches the quiz bowl semifinals to go to the Washingcon sci-fi convention on what should have been a normal, rsum-building high school trip.

If slacker Zak Duquette hadn't talked up the geek fan fest so much, maybe Clayton wouldn't have broken the rules or jeopardized Ana's last shot at freedom from her uptight parents.

Now, teaming up with Duquette is the only way for Ana to chase down Clayton in the sea of zombies, bikini-clad princesses, and Smurfs. After all, one does not simply walk into Washingcon.

But in spite of Zak's devil-may-care attitude, he may have more in common with Ana than she thinks. Ana and Zak certainly don't expect the long, crazy night, which begins as a nerdfighter manhunt, to transform into so much more. . . .

Another great book from a gifted writer
By John Rogers ClarkIV
Can uptight and laid back co-exist? Zak, AKA Duke, appears to be ultra-cool and unruffled on the outside, but he's really sad and a bit hurting on the inside. He's still missing his dad who died of cancer a few years ago and he's really uncomfortable around his stepfather, Roger, in part because of how fast he and Zak's mom got married after they met. Zak's really into role playing and all the affiliated stuff that comes with it. He's totally pumped because next weekend he'll be in his element at Washingcon, the highlight of his year. Ana is about as far personality-wise from Zak as one could get. She's ultra-serious, driven (in large part by her parents' rigid expectations to have a perfect daughter), is locked into a perpetually tight schedule and has a responsibility bump the size of Guatemala. She's stressing out about the quiz bowl competition next weekend. She feels full responsibility for the team's success, even to the point of having convinced her parents to let her precocious younger brother, Clayton, be on the team. Two completely different personalities and two completely different sets of weekend plans are about to be dumped into the same bowl of life and get thoroughly mixed together. A recipe for disaster on the surface, but much more fun and interesting underneath. When Mrs. Brinkham, the health teacher and adviser to the quiz bowl team, has Zak step into her office, his life is about to get a lot more interesting. She confronts him with the fact that he downloaded a Wikipedia article and copied it almost word for word when submitting it as his health paper. She gives him a choice: Be an alternate on the quiz team and rewrite the paper for a passing grade, or fail completely and have to take health over again in the summer. It's a tough choice for Zak. The Con is his one happy event now that Dad is gone, but he really wants to go to the community college next fall and not passing health will kill his chance to do so. He agrees to her terms. Ana is less than pleased with him as an alternate and becomes even more so when Clayton starts getting really interested in Zak's stories about previous Cons. She thaws a little when Zak saves the team from defeat in an early round, but when Clayton hops into a taxi later that evening to see what the Con is all about, she freaks completely. If her parents get wind of what her brother is up to, she's sure all the blame will fall on her head. When Zak agrees to help find her brother, they take off in another taxi and what happens over the next several hours is alternately scary and hilarious. Ana has no clue what she's about to encounter, nor does she have any idea how much popularity Zak has with the folks who go to Cons. The cast of characters Brian creates to populate the Con, the language, the events and the misadventures will be familiar to anyone who has attended one or more of these events. He gets it all right and, coupled with his ability to make both Zak and Ana appealing and ever more attracted to each other as the night progresses, makes this a great fun and feel-good read. There's nothing in the book that might deter tweens from reading it, so this is going to be a dandy addition to any library, public or school. I'd love to see it as a movie down the road.

Life-Changing Night at a Science Fiction Convention
By K. M. Martin
Zak and Ana tell this story is alternate chapters. Zak is a slacker in school; he's more interested in science fiction and computers than anything else. Ana is the always-busy, over-achiever whose on every committee and always looking to pad her transcript for college. Zak is interested in Ana but Ana has no time or interest in him. They get thrown together when Zak is in danger of failing Health but the teacher who is also the adviser of the Quiz Bowl team recruits him because she needs another team member for an up-coming tournament. Unfortunately, the Quiz Bowl tournament is the same weekend as the biggest science fiction convention in Washington State and Zak goes every year.

So, Zak finds himself in the van on the way to Quiz Bowl with Ana, her younger brother Clayton, and the other two team members. He regales them with tales of the science fiction convention happening only a few miles from the Quiz Bowl Competition. After their first round, which Zak helps them win, they have the evening off before the next round. Clayton decides to go the the convention leaving Ana and Zak to go after him and try to find him and bring him home before their adviser or Ana and Clayton's parents find out he is missing.

Most of the book happens at the convention which is filled with all sorts of wild adventure for both Zak and Ana. It brought back memories of the science fiction conventions I have attended filled with oddly dressed characters, geeks of all descriptions, movies, gaming tournaments, and even a vampire ball. This is a world where Zak fits in and Ana needs to depend on his expertise. They manage to stay one step behind Clayton while attracting a drug dealer and a number of people who would like to do either or both Zak and Ana harm.

I liked watching Zak and Ana learn more about each other and realize that the other had some valuable things to contribute. I liked the way both Ana and Zak changed after one very intense night at a science fiction convention.

Cute story!
By Rikke Lerche
I chose this book because I was in the mood for a light, and potentially fun read, and because I haven't read a book like this in ages.

It wasn't exactly all fun, but I did like it, and Ana did have some rather funny punchlines at times, but mostly it's a story about two teenagers, Zak & Ana. Both of them have issues, and stuff they're trying to make right, also they're both pretty funny, inner dialogue wise, without it becoming forced or annoying.

This is Zak's and Ana's story told over the duration of only a few days. It isn't just about what happens during those days, though. It's also the story about each of their lives ... Ana's especially.

It's about growing up, about realizing what matters, about recognizing patterns, making choices, and facing issues of grave importance. it's a fine portrait of teenage reality. It's obvious that the author cares about his characters, and as they are both equally important, and equally interesting their story makes for a fine read.

The story is told, taking turns, from Ana's POV and Zak's POV. Fortunately it's also continuous, so it's not like everything is told twice.

A cute little story, and with a lot more to it that one might think. It isn't the world's most exciting book, but I like it in that comfortingly homey way where, a book can some times make you smile and forget about plots, suspense and whatnot.

This isn't a genre I would normally choose or expect too much of, but for some reason I enjoyed this one enough to actually give it a 4 stars rating nonetheless. Compared to other books I've read in this genre, it's actually very engaging, and I enjoyed the message. In fact, I like it like I liked The Future of Us.
