Unlit Star, by Lindy Zart

Rivers Young was the popular, untouchable guy. He was like a star-bright, consuming, otherworldly. The thing about stars, though, is that they eventually fall, and Rivers was no different. He fell far, and he fell hard. Delilah Bana was the outcast enshrouded in all of life's ironies. Alone, in the dark, like dusk as it falls on the world. When Rivers fell from the sky, she was the night that caught him. In the darkness, they melded into something beautiful that shone like the sun. Only, the greater the star is, the shorter its lifespan.

I was exquisitely gutted!!!
By Nikki Arivel Larazo
I’ve lived for 27 years, been a bookworm since I was in grade school hooked to Sweet Valley High. Can you tell that I was a sucker for romance since my age was only a single digit? You bet, I was.

I’ve read almost a thousand fiction books but, there are only a few in this world that had made me stop for a while to catch my breath, because if I didn’t, I would have lost it. And despite that momentarily pause, I lost it anyway. UNLIT STAR is one of those books.

When I read the blurb, I didn’t know what I brought myself into. Sure, the blurb is like a burst of pretty words, why not give it a try? And boy, did I give it a try.

And it killed me. It was like someone speared me straight into the heart and twisted it a million times. It was pretty painful I tell you. How can a single book literally put you in agony? I was a crying mess at five in the morning. I wasn’t prepared, I didn’t have tissues within arms reach. I had no choice but to wipe the river of tears on my f***ing shirt while my breaths hitched. It was an ugly sight. Good thing was, the lights were out.

Honestly, I don’t know how to review this book without spoiling anything. But, one thing is certain: this book is beautifully written. If you think the blurb is something, wait until you are reading the actual story. Zart is a gifted b*tch. Her words are just… extraordinarily woven into something that actually make you feel. Like you belong to the book; like you are there witnessing everything right in front of your very eyes. The emotions of the characters are so palpable it was like they are physically touching you. UNLIT STAR is a powerful experience. The story is not profound, or enlightening. It’s a relatable story and I think that’s what made it more engaging.

Rivers and Delilah… Ahhh, these two are match made in the night sky. Their love story is one of the most heart-warming stories I have ever read. They were young, yes. But they were each other’s destiny. Insta love? I’ve known people in the literary world who don’t dig this sh*t, but this sh*t right here is real; their sh*t endured; their sh*t was for keeps. They were each other’s night and day. They were two very different people from different worlds. But, I guess when your heart tells you that it’s in love, then you can’t really do anything even if you try to fight it. Delilah tried, but she failed. And I’m happy she did, because that failure was what really brought them together. Two broken souls that have met, and made each other whole.

Did I tell you I loved this book? Oh, I didn’t. But, have you read what I wrote? If yes, then probably you get the idea. I was in a book funk for almost eight months now, only reading the ones that I’ve really been waiting for and not trying to find anything new. I haven't even reviewed a book for six months!!! But, I came across Unlit Star and I am glad I did. Because this book actually, is my best read this year. I’m not sure yet, but there’s this little fluttery feeling in my heart that tells me to acknowledge the thought that this may actually be my most favourite book now. I’ll let you know who wins the struggle: the loyalty to the author of the book sitting in my #1 spot, or UNLIT STAR that’s calling to my soul.

Heartfelt, Genuine and Amazing... You need to read this book.
By Kathy (Adventures of a Bookworm)
I must preface this review and let you in on a little secret. I love to read and I enjoy getting recommendations from others on quality books to read, but I have this weird nervousness about reading a book from an author I've never read before.

I've heard of Lindy Zart: all amazing and wonderful reviews and recommendations, so far. I've had an eye on her previous novels for a little while, but I had yet to change her novels from To Be Read to Currently Reading to Read.... Until now.

All I have to say is, what in the world was I waiting for? Seriously, why have I been holding out on picking up a book by this tremendously talented author? Never again. Never.

I was gifted a copy of Unlit Star by the One More Chapter blog/page on Facebook. I randomly entered the giveaway and won. I think I said something to the effect of "I'd love a chance to read one of Lindy's novels and then I'll probably rush to read the rest of her work." I'm paraphrasing, but the point is the same. Boy was I right. Thank you for gifting me this copy of Unlit Star, but I'll tell you what, I'd gladly pay the 99 pennies and even more to support this author.

What she did with this piece of fiction, I cannot begin to describe the eloquence and beauty she brought to the written word. It's hard to discuss the story itself without spoiling it too much. The characters of Delilah and Rivers will have a strong grip on my heart for quite a long time.

She is the quirky girl who keeps to herself. He's the high school jock who is on top of the world. Then their worlds collide and something magical happens. They provide a beacon of light for each other and bring to life a part of themselves they didn't know existed until they were thrust together one summer.

Their story is warm, heartfelt and genuine. Zart's ability to craft the written word to make you believe you're surrounded by the beauty she describes in her story, feeling all the love and passion the characters are living within the pages.

There really are no words to even describe how much I truly adored this book. I would (and have been) tell everyone I know that this is one novel you must one-click without hesitation. It is the epitome of outstanding writing and I cannot recommend it enough. Seriously, for 99 cents, this is a steal, so get your clicking finger ready and pick up this book already, you won't soon regret it.

Oh, and don't forget the tissues.

Bartender Rating: Top Shelf - A punch to the chest, but you're going to love it!

Twice I read this book. Twice I fell in love with Rivers and struggled with his transition into his a new life. Twice I cried my heart out for Delilah. Twice I walked away because I didn't want it to end, but loved the ending anyway. Such a wonderful ending for a tragic book.

Part of me wonders what it would be like—to be loved by him. Or even just desired. To be with a guy like Rivers has got to be unforgettable. Everything he does is done with such intensity that being loved by him couldn't be any less than overwhelming. I think it would be comparable to continually trying to catch your breath and failing.

This book is beautiful, emotional, introspective and delicate. Even though Rivers and Delilah are fresh out of high school, this isn't a high school love/crush story. Both of these characters are thrust into situations most adults never experience. As an adult, you care for the fact that they have to endure such hardships at such a young age. As a reader who craves stories that are deeper, emotional, but still romantic, you will be glad you had a chance to meet these more mature characters.

I may keep my distance from others, but I am in no way shy. I keep my distance because I've found that I am a better person when I have no one looking at me, making me feel like I need to prove something to them, like I need to show them I have worth. I know my worth and the only person I need to prove anything to is myself.

Knowing Rivers is like opening a book of poetry that keeps getting more and more lovely. His harsh tone with Delilah softens as he begins to accept his scarred future. As Delilah helps him realize his potential, and the very convenient living arrangements that force them to talk to each other, Rivers leaves the high school jock behind to become a better person. Even though Delilah had the majority of dialogue, Rivers’ words were by far the most jarring.

“Miss you? Yes. Long for you? Yes. I realized something last night, as I laid there without you next to me. All it took was one night.” He pauses. “I don't think there is a question as to whether or not I want you, because that is painfully blatant right now, but did I miss you? It was so much more than that. And do I need you? Yes. I need you. My heart needs you, Delilah. I don't want to wake up without you again, not until I have to. And even then—even then I will just barely tolerate it.”

Delilah provides a beautiful narrative and I did appreciate the characters' approach to obstacles and the speed at which they hurdled them. She has a story to tell, but it's not going to bore you or build you up just to let you down. You are constantly moving up, even to the bitter end. I felt optimistic, but was always scared to “turn the page” because I knew there was something about to go terribly wrong. However, when it did, it was still lovely.

To me, learning about him is like luminosity in the middle of a rayless abyss, warmth in the coldness, hope in the face of despair—a crack of light through the nothingness blackness brings.

I love these characters, but more importantly, the atmosphere that Lindy Zart creates for them. I always love WHERE she puts them. You can feel the grass, see the sunlight and taste the peanut butter.

His body heat seeps into my side, as does his sweet smell that makes me homesick for a home I've never had. It's more of a sense than an actual place—a feeling of wholeness.
