About the Author
Dr. Dye is Professor of Developmental Biology at Western Connecticut State University. About the Author
Lori Frost, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech/language pathologist and Andy Bondy, Ph.D., is a behavior analyst. They co-developed the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), an evidence-based practice that is used around the world to promote functional communication. They co-authored the PECS Training Manual, 2nd Edition and Autism 24/7 (Woodbine House, 2007) as well as many book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. They co-founded Pyramid Educational Consultants, an internationally based team of specialists from many fields working together to promote integration of the principles of applied behavior analysis within functional activities and an emphasis on developing functional communication skills independent of modality.

For non-verbal child - this is a great book!

It is truly frustrating when your child who should speak - can't speak. Just because they cannot speak - does not mean they DON'T understand. They do understand. It is just that they way of showing you they understand is not available to them yet.
This is a great book for helping you get introduced to PECS (Picture Exchange System) and scheduling. This book helped me get started on giving my autistic son WORDS he could not express.
With this book buy an inexpensive digital camera, plastic laminate and an inexpensive color printer because PECS will change your childs life. This book will help you get started.
We started PECS with Jeff just under three years of age. After 2 weeks he was making requests with single pictures and NO LONGER TANTRUMING BECAUSE HE WAS FRUSTRATED! HE COULD COMMUNICATE. Fast forward to age five and Jeff can read over 500 words, write sentences because he used PECS. PECS changed my son's life and made the beginning process of communication before speech possible.
(Happy ending, Jeff now speaks!)

Ok, but not instructional enough

My son, 3, has been using PECS for 6 months now and I bought this book hoping to find more instruction on the use of PECS and different sentence structures. While the book gives a good overview of the system, I think there is far too little concrete information for parents wishing to implement PECS in a home environment. I was disappointed that right when I thought the author would go into detail about a topic, he simply referred to another publication for more information.
If a parent is looking for real instruction on using PECS, I would recommend the instructional manual sold by Pyramid Educational Products. PECS is a very useful tool in gaining understanding and speech in autistic children. This book just isn't the best way to go about learning how to implement the program.

Real Help Real Fast for Communications Challenged Children

"A Picture's Worth" is simply a must read for anyone who seeks help for a child who is challenged by verbal communications.

The authors, Andy Bondy and Lori Frost are the developers of PECS (The Picture Exchange Communications System). PECS seeks to quickly establish functional communications with children with autism. Contrary to popular belief, PECS will not discourage a child from developing verbal speech, or cause a child to lose established speech.

Although the therapeutic goal of PECS seeks only to rapidly establish functional augmented communications by teaching a child to exchange a picture icon for a highly desired item, the program's application in preschoolers offers a marvelous side effect. Approximately two-thirds of the children under five who used PECS as their primary means of communications for a full year moved on to develop verbal language.

A Picture's Worth describes in user friendly language the mechanics and theories behind the six successive levels of implementing PECS. Bondy and Frost's user friendly language and clearly written commentary makes it easy for anyone who is interested in establishing communications with their autistic child to begin training.

The book also offers compelling case studies, and an overview of the innovative and effective behavioral techniques of Bondy and Frost's companion program, "The Pyramid Approach to Education".

PECS is particularly effective when combined with the behavioral techniques of the Pyramid Approach to education, and offers the child who has struggled to find success with Lovaas based ABA and other intervetion programs an inexpensive option which will appeal to the well documented visual strengths of children with autism.

Anyone considering implementing a beginning intervention program with a child with autism should consider taking a look at this insightful, easy to read, and well written contribution to the body of literature regarding autism teaching methods.

PECS is a marvelous stand alone program for beginning communicators, but it can also coexist nicely with any other early intervention programs, allowing your child to communicate effectively and naturally reduce negative behaviors while alternative interventions seek to teach verbal language.

As the mother of two boys with autism, I wish I'd begun PECS on the day of their diagnoses. However, I'd be sure to advance them to more sophisticated means of augmented communications as they age out of early intervention as most children with autism will find that they have much more to communicate than their basic wants and needs. Moving along towards more advanced techonology in communications systems will allow them to do so, and prevent many of the negative behaviors that came back to our son when his method of communications failed to grow with him.

Karen Becker is veterinarian, animal acupuncturist, and homeopath practicing in Illinois. Natural Pet Animal hospital focuses on integrative pet care for dogs, cats, birds and exotic animals. She also runs Covenant Wildlife Rehabilitation, a non-profit facility that cares for injured and orphaned Chicago area wildlife. She is the chief veterinarian for mercolahealthypets.com. Beth Taylor spent 20 years focusing on food and nutrition for dogs and cats and was involved in the first nationally marketed fresh frozen diets for pets, Steve s Real Food, where she provided training for veterinarians and retailers in the use of fresh food diets. real food for pets

After watching Dr. Becker's video about real food for my pets, I bought the book. There is alot more to this than I was expecting, given the impression I was left with after watching the video. This is more involved than I thought it would be and I do not possess the money to buy some of the equipment needed to produce the food. I am on a limited income so I thought this would be the way for me to go to care for my pets more healthfully. It is a well written book and it did give me alot of insight to the way I was feeding my pets. I would recommend this book to people because it does give helpful information. Even if you don't make food for your pets this book explains what you need to look for when choosing food, so you can feed your pets better.

Great Book!!

When I read the first half of the book, I thought, wow this is complicated. But as I read the second half of the book it clicked. The chart that you fill out is a big help. My wife and I switched our 2 golden retrievers to this diet. They are both about a year old, and after a couple of weeks on the diet they seem to glow. They seem to have so much energy now and their coats are the greatest I have seen. (I have had golden retrievers for the last 25 years). I also noticed that they don't drink as much water as they did when they were on dry kibble. The raw diet is 70 percent water, compared to 12 percent water in dry dog food. I also liked the recipe for the mineral supplement to ensure the dogs are getting the minerals they need. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to get away from the corrupt pet food industry and feed their dogs a healthy, balanced raw food diet.

There is a lot of good information in this book, plenty to help get you started on feeding your pets a healthy home made diet. With that said, I suggest reading a lot of these books and finding what works for your pets. This book suggest a cabinet full of supplements for your pet in addition to the foods you are feeding. Adding supplements to the meals isn't a bad thing at all, but are they truly necessary? Different books will say different things, some telling you that your pets will get everything they need from a properly prepared home diet, others say some supplements are needed. Keep reading and talk to your holistic vet or find an animal nutritionist to discuss this with if you still have questions.

Allegretti, who teaches legal ethics at Creighton University, defines the crisis of the legal profession as a spiritual crisis rather than a crisis of ethics, commercialization, or public relations. His response in this book is an exemplary exercise in professional ethics that goes beyond examination of codes of conduct to rethink "vocation" and "profession" in the context of legal practice. Drawing on formal training and experience in both law and theology, Allegretti uses H. Richard Niebuhr's familiar typology to characterize Christian attitudes toward law and to advocate what Niebuhr described as a "transformative" practice. Allegretti's discussion of covenant, care, and calling--thoroughly informed by Calvin, Luther, and Carol Gilligan--will be of interest not only to lawyers but also to other readers who struggle with a separation between job and calling. About the Author
Allegretti has a degree in law from Harvard University and in divinity from Yale. He has taught at Creighton University, at the Albany School of Law and at Siena College in Loudonville, New York.

Breaking Free from the "Lawyer as Hired Gun" Mindset

Allegretti's classic work presents an inspiring and intellectually solid alternative career paradigm for Christians who find themselves practicing law (or lawyers who find themselves seeking to practice Christianity). He faces the tough questions head on: Is it really possible for a faithful Christian to be an effective lawyer? Must Christian lawyers overlook their own moral values and practice law in the same way as everyone else? Is the culturally dominant "lawyer as hired gun" mindset really the only legitimate approach? Readers will be challenged in their assumptions about what it means to be a lawyer, and encouraged in their efforts to integrate faith and legal practice. As an actively practicing Christian attorney and author (The Believer's Guide to Legal Issues), I found The Lawyer's Calling to be a serious, inspiring and thought-provoking book.

The Lawyer's Calling is a thoughtful meditation on the intersection--and the tension--between Christian faith and professional practice. It has value beyond the legal profession--any professional will recognize the tensions Allegretti explores in this brief, readable volume. If you struggle with the connection--or lack of connection--between what you do on Sunday and what you do the rest of the week, this little book will help you. Allegretti is a conversational and very readable writer. Highly recommended.

The author offers a succinct, practical and easily understood analysis of how one can be a Christian, ethical lawyer. It is a great resource for Christian law students who may be challenged as to whether to pursue a career in the law.
