Nice retelling of Cap's emergence to a modern world. Like the examination of change in society, and comparing to the films, I like this slightly more brash Captain America.

Heartfelt Captain America

I've been looking to get into Captain America for a while now, so I figured why not a story about Cap written by my favorite comic book writer, Mark Waid.

This story starts off fantastic in showing Steve and Bucky during WWII. Bucky being the real energetic guy, enjoying the limelight. Steve, on the other hand, is a solemn soldier. He just wants to do his duty for his country. The attention he's gained is unwanted by him, to the point that he semi disrespects the idea of Captain America in front of soldiers that idolize Cap.

This is a story about how Captain America goes from a time when he is most useful/needed, to a time when there's almost no need for him at all. This is a story about Cap's unfreezing, his wake into the 21st century. Everything has changed, and this story shows how he deals with the change.

There are some really, really heartfelt moments, heartbreaking at some points. References to historical events were perfect, so were Steve's reaction to finding out about them.

If I had one complaint, it's that the plot felt a little rushed with the points of conflict. If this story was longer, say Sueprman: Birthright length, I believe Waid would have done a flawless (as near flawless as it already is) story. But that's a minor issue because it's more of a Man vs. Self plot than Man vs. Man.

Overall, this story, to me, represents what Captain America is about. Self sacrifice, good natured, and the U.S.'s history and good values.

Deeply moving, a bittersweet tribute to America

This is a deeply moving and earnestly written miniseries. The story is what compelled me to buy it--Cap's feelings about the good and bad in both modern society and the post-WWII era mirror our own. Mark Waid did a great job in pacing each issue, although for the sake of storytelling some of our historical heroes are depicted as flawless. The last few pages are some of my favorites. Overall, it's hopeful and reflective, which is the reason I love Cap.

Linda Castillo is definitely an author to watch!

COPS AND. . . LOVERS Is a wonderful book, perhaps even better than Ms. Castillo's award-winning debut, REMEMBER THE NIGHT. The heroine, Erin, is a perfect blend of vulnerable, yet strong and determined. The hero, Nick, is incredibly sexy, even though he's fiercely overprotective, and even as we get glimpses of his emotional torment. The sexual tension sizzled between these two, and the action-packed scenes kept me turning the pages. Another keeper from Ms. Castillo.

I just love Linda Castillo's work! In this book, her characters are so real you think you just might run into them on the street corner tomorrow. Erin is gutsy and yet vulnerable...which plays right into Nick's need to protect, and his fear of risk-taking women. They spark like crazy every time they get together. Cops and...Lovers is a yummy summer read! Don't miss it!

RAMSES III AS NECTANEBO I

I guess Velikovsky can be considered one of the fathers of the alternative history movement and authors like Graham Hancock owe him a debt. Peoples of the Sea is the fourth volume in his Ages In Chaos series. The book can be read independently and it covers the nearly two centuries of Persian domination of Egypt and the early dynasties of the Ptolemies. In it, Velikovsky argues that conventional history's foundations are shaky and that Egyptian historical chronology needs to be revised. Conventional history claims that the Peoples of the Sea were barbarians who nearly destroyed civilisation before they were defeated by Pharao Ramses III in the 12th century B.C. Velikovsky instead believes that there is enough archaeological and documentary evidence to prove that they were Greek mercenaries and that their allies the Pereset weren't ancient Philisines but Persians. He argues that Ramses III was Nectanebo I of the Greek historians who lived 800 years later, and he places these events not in the 12th but in the 4th century B.C. The peoples of the Sea were thus fourth century mercenaries from Asia Minor and Greece, of the time of Plato. He shows that there was a strong Semitic (Hebrew and Assyrian) influence on the language, religion and art of Egypt in the time of Ramses III and provides much other archaeological and documentary evidence. The book includes 16 black & white plates including tiles of Ramses III, bass reliefs of the battles against the Peoples of the Sea, the pylon of the Khonsu Temple and portal of the Ramses III temple at Medinet Habu and artwork from the tomb of Si-Amon at Siwa Oasis. The main text concludes with chronological charts in parallel tables listing Persia, Palestine, the Greek World and Egypt from 550 B.C. to 340 B.C. The supplement on Astronomy and Chronology includes chapters on The Foundations of Egyptian Chronology, Sirius and Venus. With Velikovsky' dazzling erudition, Peoples Of The Sea reads like a detective story. I don't know to what extent Velikovsky's alternative chronology has been accepted or convincingly disproved but all his work is fascinating and stimulating to read, as he had the talent for making history come alive.

Velikovsky has given us not just a theory, but a whole system of theory embracing astronomy, cosmology, egyptology, archaeology, geology, history, religion, politics, even psychology. And it all meshes together like a well-designed gearbox.

It's us -- for Establishment Science has led us so far into a mess that its scientists are embarrassed to admit their colossal folly. This book completed Velikovsky's reconstruction of ancient history, bringing the story down to the dawn of the Hellenistic Age. In Peoples of the Sea Velikovsky claimed that Egypt's Twentieth Dynasty, whose most important pharaoh was Ramses III, belonged near the end of the Persian era, and he identified Ramses III with Nectanebo I, the pharaoh who defeated an attempted Persian reconquest of Egypt under Artaxerxes II. He argued that Ramses III's pylon at Medinet Habu, which records his victory over the Pereset and the Sea Peoples, was in fact Nectanebo's record of his victory over the Persians around 375 BC.
Having already rejected the preceding volume of Ages in Chaos, which placed Ramses II and the Nineteenth Dynasty in the sixth century BC - just before the Persian Invasion of Egypt - the scholarly establishment was in no mood to look favourably on this part of Velikovsky's grand reworking of history. However, rather than counter the arguments presented in the book, they chose simply to ignore them; and Peoples of the Sea remains one of the least debated of Velikovsky's works. This is a great pity, for the evidence he musters is impressive and has, I believe, stood the test of time.
The only real counter-argument was presented by Egyptologist Michael Jones and biblical scholar John Bimson. These two claimed that the genealogies of the workmen at Deir el Medina, which spanned the Nineteenth, Twentieth and Twenty-First Dynasties, proved beyond question that there cannot have been a long gap between the end of the Nineteenth Dynasty and the beginning of the Twentieth, as Velikovsky had suggested (he had the Nineteenth Dynasty ending in 525 BC and the Twentieth beginning around 400 BC.) I have examined this evidence myself in one of my own publications, and have shown Jones's and Bimson's reasoning to be spurious. Rather than presenting a problem for Velikovsky, the evidence from Deir el Medina furnishes further valuable support. Velikovsky stands vindicated, and Peoples of the Sea must eventually be recognized for what it is: a masterpiece of historical detective work.

I was a student of Joseph Brye in 1958/1959. His text was typed and reproduced on a mimeograph. It had a cardstock cover and back and a plastic binding. Joe tried to talk me out of dropping out of school. He offered to put me up at his house long enough to finish orchestrating a piece I had written. My 18 year old mind was too full of other things and I really could not afford to continue at that time. I regret I couldn't take his offer and the piece has never been finished.

My copy of his original text was long ago faded, torn and lost. I am so glad to find he published his book and I have been able to purchase a copy. I am in my 70's now and can take the time and with the help of his text might be able to finish my work.

thank you Mr. Brye - You were the finest educator I ever knew.

A very Good Text

I took music theory in college from Joseph Brye and we used this text in his class. That was many years ago and Joe has passed away but I still own my text and even look at it on occasion. I found that his teaching augmented the text very nicely because he filled in much more detail around the basic conecpts he presented in the book. Now, some 30 years later I still use the theory conecpts I learned from Joe Brye when I improvise on the piano or when I want to understand a passage from a piece of music literature.

I honestly haven't looked at very many other theory books so I can't compare very well (and so hesitate to give it a 5) but this book definitely is worth it and gives you solid basic information.

This is the best music theory text ever. It should be reprinted. No one ever sells a copy after reading it. Basic theory is present in short comprehensible chunks of related information. Get a copy if you can or check university libraries.
